Renaming a Toolbar

Summary: You can easily create custom toolbars in Excel. Each of the toolbars has a name, and you can just as easily change that toolbar's name at a later time. This tip shows how easy it really is. (This tip works with Microsoft Excel 97, Excel 2000, Excel 2002, and Excel 2003.)

Excel allows you to create your own custom toolbars, as described in other issues of ExcelTips. Once created, you may want to rename one of your custom toolbars to more accurately reflect its purpose. You cannot rename the built-in toolbars used by Excel. If you want to rename one of your custom toolbars, you should follow these steps:

  1. Choose the Customize option from the Tools menu. Excel displays the Customize dialog box.
  2. Make sure the Toolbars tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. In the list of toolbars, select the one you want to rename. (Remember, you can only rename custom toolbars.)
  4. Click on the Rename button. (The button should be available if you selected a custom toolbar in step 3.) Excel displays the Rename Toolbar dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  5. In the Toolbar Name box, change the toolbar name to suit your needs.
  6. Click on OK.
  7. Click on Close.
