Resetting Excel Menus

Summary: Getting rid of custom menus by resetting them through Excel's Tool menu. (This tip works with Microsoft Excel 97, Excel 2000, Excel 2002, and Excel 2003.)

Excel makes it easy to customize virtually everything you see on your screen. It is possible, for instance, to change the options that appear on the menus used by Excel. If you run across a system in which the menus have been changed, then you can change them back by following these steps:

  1. Choose the Customize option from the Tools menu. This displays the Customize dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  2. With the Customize dialog box open, right-click on the menu that you want to reset. This displays a Context menu. (If you only want to reset a sub-menu, left click on the major menu and then right-click on the sub-menu.)
  3. Choose Reset from the Context menu. The menu options are returned to their default settings.
  4. Close the Customize dialog box.

Tip #2645 applies to Microsoft Excel versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
