Resizing a Drop-Down List

Summary: A great tip on getting your drop-down lists the size you want them. (This tip works with Microsoft Excel 97, Excel 2000, Excel 2002, and Excel 2003.)

Certain tools on the Excel toolbars require the use of drop-down lists. For instance, you can see several of these on the Formatting toolbar; they are used for font names and font sizes. As you customize Excel, you can change the size of these drop-down lists, if desired. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose Customize from the Tools menu. Excel displays the Customize dialog box.
  2. On your existing toolbars, click on the drop-down list whose size you want to adjust. A black selection box should appear around the list.
  3. Point to the left or right border of the black border; click and hold down the mouse button.
  4. Move the mouse left or right until the list box is the width you want.
  5. Release the mouse button.
